Free wordcount tool, aim for 300 for SEO

November 20, 2012 by Peter Wordpress SEO Expert

Free wordcount tool, aim for 300 for SEO Wordpress SEO ExpertSearch Engine Optimisation (SEO) is an important part of building your online community.

A good guideline is each piece of content you create (be it a page, or blog post) on your site should have at least 300 words of original content.

Here’s a helpful tool—copy and paste your text in it, and find out instantly how many words you’ve got.

Those people using WordPress have a word counting system built in already, but the other advantage of this tool is is works out and lists the keywords your text is best suited for. So if the results there aren’t what you’d like, tweak your copy until your see your targeted keywords in the top few spots.

300 words can be harder than it seems. You don’t want to waffle and just pad it out. More often than not verbosity and writing for the web are not good friends.

So I challenge you to never take the easy way out, but rather to work hard to get at least 300 words of targeted (effective keyword use), interesting, well structured content.

Meta tags and building your online community

November 15, 2012 by Peter Wordpress SEO Expert

Part of building your online community is without a doubt, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). You want your tribe to be well-positioned, and desirable.

It’s just just new members either, but existing ones want to know they’re a part of something exciting, something that ranks highly. Something prestigious.

The “meta tags” in your site’s code are really important here. There’s a science behind it of course, but it’s something you want an expert like myself to help you with. They’re small pieces of code that search engines read to get a better ides of what your site is about, and what keywords it should look for.

However, here’s one of the tricks of the trade you can use yourself. This tool gives you feedback and advice regarding your meta data, helpfully colour coded for people who don’t want to worry about interpreting too much of it.

My favourite metric it returns is to check how relevant your keywords are to your content. This is an absolute must, and something to look at for all your pages.

It’s a bit technical, but the colour coding helps.

Mind you, so can I.

Posting USB memory costs more than you think

November 6, 2012 by Peter Wordpress SEO Expert

I’ve been caught out by this a few times now.

Posting a USB memory stick costs more than a regular letter. Many people just pop them in envelopes and stick a standard second class stamp on it, thinking nothing of it.

And fair enough, you’d be forgiven for thinking something so small should count as a standard letter.

Sadly, they’re generally too thick to be accepted that way, and the recipients end up with a small (but annoying) fee to pay at their local Post Office. Easily the most frustrating thing is usually the postage is only 19p short, to which a pound gets added as a handling fee—and thus the Royal Mail makes more on the transaction than it would cost to send the item twice.

(If you’re on of the people who has recently fallen foul of this when sending me USB sticks, fret not, I have no plans to come after you! Just to show there are no hard feelings, a few bricks are on their way to you, affixed with a single used stamp from New Zealand. Don’t get upset with me, they’re too large to fit through your mail slot so you were always going to have to visit your local Post Office for collection anyway.)

Easily search and replace throughout a (smallish) MySQL database

September 19, 2012 by Peter Wordpress SEO Expert

Every now and then I need to search through an entire MySQL database, to change a word, term, URL, or some other string.

Rather than searching through the entire database to make the change, I just use phpMyAdmin to export the whole thing as an .sql file, which is of course just plain text.

Open it in a text editor, find and replace in there, then re-upload to phpMyAdmin.

In short, I get it done easily in a bout 45 seconds without having to worry about a typo in an SQL query destroying my data.

Facebook’s Spotify privacy settings, for dummies

September 19, 2012 by Peter Wordpress SEO Expert

I listen to a LOT of music. It’s not often you’ll see me without a pair of headphones on (which might have something to do with why I’ve got a hearing test this afternoon!).

Some of it is undeniably wonderful, and some of my tastes…well…let’s just say it’s not often that I give out my last.fm profile.

I’m also big on sharing, and like to share playlists or tracks with friends on Facebook, but found whenever I did they were coming up with the “only me” privacy setting, which is about as useful as a chocolate teapot.

With Facebook’s seemingly fortnightly changes to it’s privacy management, it’s not always obvious where you fix something like that.

Here is exactly how you fix precisely that:

Gmail signatures and replying

May 29, 2012 by Peter Wordpress SEO Expert

I’m a big Gmail fan, and use it as my primary email for *@mahoneywebmarketing.co. It may not look from the address like it’s Gmail, but it is.

A personal tweak I like was to change the settings so that when I reply, my rather snazzy email signature appears at the top under the cursor (so it will be directly beneath my reply) rather than all the way at the bottom of what can be a fairly long email thread.

To do this, just go to Settings > Labs, and look for “Signature tweaks”. There’s only one option, so just enable that and you’re done!
